VitalSkin is always looking for new ways to help our supported doctors and providers offer the best care possible. From a clinical standpoint, that includes having access to helpful resources for diagnosing and treating patients – including ideal dermatopathology and lab testing options.
Dermatopathology plays a huge role in providing the best dermatology care. It is often a critical step in making the correct diagnosis of aggressive skin cancer or unlocking important clues in a difficult-to-diagnose inflammatory skin disorder.
To ensure the lab work needs of supported doctors are effectively met, VitalSkin recently opened its own in-house dermatopathology lab in Urbana, IL. The lab shares the same location as the organization’s Support Office and Champaign-Urbana practice. The facility features cutting-edge technology that can accurately evaluate skin biopsies and/or specimens and quickly deliver results.
With the lab opening, we have chosen to work with fellowship-trained and board-certified dermatopathologists who have completed some of the best training and educational programs in the country. Not only do they possess a deep knowledge of complex dermatopathology, but work closely and collaboratively with VitalSkin dermatologists to provide important dermopathy diagnoses in a highly accurate and efficient manner. Rather than splitting time between a variety of biopsies like in a general pathology lab setting, these top dermatopathologists in our lab are completely focused on skin biopsy diagnostics.
A pathology lab manager and several technicians have also been brought in. The lab team has started processing initial skin biopsies and samples for VitalSkin-supported practices. As the lab grows, the lab team will continue to expand in order to support additional VitalSkin practices in central Illinois and other areas.
